Sowing:

  • Direct sow 1/4–1/2″” deep in early spring or late summer.

Spacing:

  • Thin to 2–6″” apart if larger stalks are desired.
  • Blanching: Hill plants 2–3 times during growth to elongate and whiten stalks.
  • Soil Preparation: Enrich with aged compost; onions prefer fertile soils free of weeds.
  • Care: Water moderately and keep soil moist but not soggy. Use mulch to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
  • Pest Management: Watch for onion thrips, maggots, and fungal diseases like botrytis or downy mildew. Rotate crops and use natural predators or fungicides as needed.
  • Wintering: Apply mulch in colder climates for overwintering and remove excess in spring.
